Tucked away on Henry Street is a spot far more significant and glamorous than the unassuming name of its location in Two Bridges / Chinatown. Nothing against guys named Henry, but that generic maleness is in delicious juxtaposition to the female curators from historically marginalized communities featured by Assembly Room. Also on display are the co-founders of this gallery, diverse women who bring creative entrepreneurial zeal to this important city canvas.
With rotating exhibitions of female curators, expressing across a range of medium, Assembly Room has become the organic space that Paola Gallio (Italian), Natasha Becker (South African) and Yulia Topchiy (Russian) envisioned when they first looked at the empty storefront.
From December 8, 2019 – January 12, 2020, Assembly Room will be showing Implied Body, a group exhibition curated by guest curator Emily Alesandrini and featuring works by Yan Cynthia Chen, Beatrice Modisett, Tariku Shiferaw, and Kennedy Yanko.
Past shows have featured works curated by similarly focused women dedicated to elevating artists who speak to the dynamics of gender, power, presence and expression.
Gallery hours are Thursday-Sunday, 1-7 pm, and by appointment at [email protected] .
